Industrial Chicago was a man-made capitalist version of Dante's Inferno. The novel, even when it leaves Packingtown behind, is unrelentingly grim. Jurgis' wife, Ona, dies in childbirth, and then his son Antanas drowns in a puddle in the street. The immigrants die one after another, from work injuries or worse: one boy passes out in a remote corner of a factory and is eaten by rats. Illegal and unsanitary conditions in the packing plants are detailed, and disaster after disaster ensues. Socialist activist Sinclair used all the skills he had honed in writing popular pot-boiler novels to make Jurgis and his friends and family represent all the bad things that could happen to anyone in the factories, streets and saloons of Chicago. Things go rapidly downhill, as they are brutalized by the work and exploited by the corrupt economic system. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Batgirl and robin year oneWith time, Stephanie got closer to then-Robin Tim Drake and the two began dating. Tim essentially evolved from every kid's fantasy into a darker, jaded, and younger version of Batman as the harsh realities of vigilantism crashed down around him.Ĭluemaster's daughter, Stephanie Brown suited up as Spoiler when she learned her father was a criminal, making it her life's mission to spoil his plans. Although Tim's fallen into something of an indetity crisis in recent years (not quite Robin, but not Red Robin either), he was the first Robin to get their own solo series and was an incredibly well developed character before the New 52. Tim's bravery was enough to convince both Dick and Bruce that Batman needed a partner – but not Nightwing, a new Robin. While Dick rejected the offer, he and Batman ended up captured by Two-Face, leaving Tim to don the Robin costume and save them. He used this knowledge to leverage a conversation with the two heroes to convince them to team back up. Paying close attention to Batman's career after Robin died, Tim monitored Bruce and watched him gradually descend deeper into darkness.īy connecting the time he watched the Graysons die at Haly's Circus as a boy with Bruce adopting Dick Grayson, Tim even figured out Batman and Nightwing's secret identities. Instead of Bruce taking him in as an orphan or Batman saving him from a life of crime, Tim simply wanted to help the Dark Knight come to terms with Robin's death. Bruce Wayn's third canonical Robin, Tim Drake took a very different angle to becoming Batman's partner. “Not even funny.” The way he looked at me quelled the growing feeling of uneasiness that had crept up the last few days. Wonder who will be sitting next to me on the way home?” Takeoff is awesome if you just sit back and enjoy the ride.” I was entirely lost in the kiss and didn’t even notice that the plane had taken off until we came up for air. You’re going to go there when I’m busy trying to have a panic attack?” I miss the way they scratch at my back when you’re close and I slow down.” “I like the feel of your nails digging into me. Mine was squeezing all the color from his, except where my nails were nearly piercing his skin. “You know, I earn a good living with that hand.” Brody’s eyes narrowed on our joined hands. Especially not when the captain came on again to give us an update, letting us all know we were third in line for takeoff, and we should be on our way in five minutes. Brody turned around in his chair and spoke to the reporter behind us. My insides were starting to freak out, and I couldn’t control it. 7/7/2023 0 Comments The maze runner crank palaceTaking place during the latter events of The Death Cure, Crank Palace tells the story of Newt like never before, from inside his own mind, as he searches for meaning in a life gone horribly wrong. This begins with some attention to Bond as a physical operative. Bond is a THREE pack a day smoker and a heavy drinker and M is worried about his ace. Almost a token scene, but would it be Bond without ultra-cool at the card table?īond with a health problem. Broccoli’s casting in the films always entertains but they got the idea from Fleming and his creation of Domino is inspired. We also chatted about it for UNTAMED, but again, life, as it does, got in the way. As we were both insanely busy, it never really got off the ground. Anywhoo.Ī year ago Miss Clare brought the idea of a book trailer up with me, we talked about doing something for SURRENDER 2.0 the reissue of the first of the MacKinnon stories. One that is difficult to duplicate, and really I haven’t seen from very many authors. The secondary characters, by right of being fully realized, add SO MUCH to the overall story that you feel a PART of it. She fleshes out every man in the book, not merely the hero and his heroine. The characters are so rich and passionate, every one of them. To say I’m in love with these books would be mild. A love story during the French and Indian War? YES. The story is beyond anything I could have imagined, because she is SO good with history and painting a beautiful image on a hardcore backdrop. Pamela sent it to me a few months ago to read, and I just loved it. First off, let me say that this book is incredible. |
